Knowsley Industrial Estate

MJ Finnigan Limited have recently completed the demolition of a redundant factory unit and 25 metre water tower located at Knowsley Industrial Estate in Merseyside. The project was completed on behalf of Morgan Ashurst to make way for a new car park on site.

The works were located on the busy industrial park site with numerous business remaining live throughout the contract period. Stringent arrangements were made to ensure that a co-ordinated approach was adopted to traffic management, segregation of the public and site residents from the demolition areas and security arrangements. This was done through close liaison with all parties involved.

This project presented a number of challenges to the company. The Tower structure was clad entirely with asbestos containing materials and was carefully removed by operatives working from high level access platforms. A live operational sub station was located immediately adjacent to the water tower and was protected and maintained in operation throughout the works. A careful crash deck scaffold structure was designed and fitted to the sub station which allowed the water tower to be demolished by a high reach demolition excavator without ever jeopardising safety or the workings of the sub station.

Detailed method statements were issued for each phase of the works, (asbestos cladding removal, notifiable asbestos removal, soft strip, mechanical demolition and high reach demolition).

All of MJ Finnigan’s proposed methods were approved to the high standards of health and safety demanded on all Morgan Ashurst sites.

The MJ Finnigan Management team called for regular Safety Audits of the site, weekly Tool Box Talks with regards to safety, Method Statement Induction courses for all Operatives on site, and Progress / Safety Meetings with the client.

Detailed auditing was also undertaken to ensure that the Project Management procedures were being followed. The 6 week Project was completed on time to the client’s full satisfaction with no injuries, accidents, or incident to members of staff or the public.
